Finding The Right Tennis Racquet For You

By Riley Henderson

In most games you play, the equipment you use can make all the difference in the world. In the game of tennis, choosing a good tennis racquet can help you improve your score or play more effectively.

The most preferred tennis racquet is made of graphite, due to its durability and high stiffness-to-weight ratio. The racquets are comprised of a carbon fiber that adds strength to the plastic resin that the racquet is formed from. If other materials are used, aside from resin and graphite, that frame is called a composite. The quality of these racquets depends on the amount of graphite used, however, and some composites can be too flexible for advanced tennis players.

A tennis racquet comes in two basic sizes, called a large head or small head. The best way to determine what size is best for you is to see what is most important for your game. A large head on a tennis racquet gives you more power, a wider string pattern for a better spin on the ball, and a better aim of the tennis ball. A small head, on the other hand, can offer more control and more room to move. If you are beginning tennis, a larger head is the best choice, while more advanced players use a mid-sized or smaller head.

There are a few ways a player can increase the power of a tennis racquet. Look for racquets that have a larger head size, stiffer material or higher weight, and lastly, a longer handle. On the other hand, a smaller and stiffer racquet with tight strings can improve control of the swing. Depending on what needs improvement, different racquets can help with grip, power or control.

When shopping for a tennis racquet as a beginner, most major discount stores offer them at a wide range of prices. A great way to start out in the game is by using a pre-strung aluminum racquet until you get a feel for the game and want to invest more money. Cheap is not always the best option, so bring a friend who plays tennis or ask sales associate questions in order to get the best deal. If you are an intermediate or better player, you might do best using a graphite or composite racquet. These can be found anywhere, and at a variety of prices.

If you are serious about the game, getting a tennis racquet at a pro shop may be the best way to go. Most offer advice and stringing options for you. Pro shops also offer comparable prices to other stores. Finding equipment online can be a cheaper alternative, but only if you know exactly what you are looking for. As a beginner though, the cheapest way is to visit the local discount store.

Since finding the right tennis racquet can seem tricky, it is most often a good idea to get something cheap yet durable while learning the game. Once you advance in skill, there is a variety of racquets to choose from to help you excel at your game.
