Do You Know The Golf Rules Of Etiquette?
By Samantha Kay
Golf etiquette? "You don't have very good golf etiquette my boy." That's what I heard during my first round of golf. I didn't even know what the word etiquette meant. Luckily I was told that etiquette meant I was not behaving the way I was supposed to when I played golf. If you are new to golf I will save this embarrassment and give you a few of the rules of golf etiquette.
- Rules vary. The rules of etiquette can vary depending on where you play. Most courses have the rules written down and will be more than happy to give you a copy.
- Rules apply to everyone. If you are a new golfer or a seasoned pro, rules of etiquette apply to both of you equally. I have been on several courses where more 'seasoned' players believe the rules only apply to others. Don't allow yourself to be mistreated because of your age or experience level.
- Be on time. Many courses require you to reserve a tee time. Always arrive early so you can warm up - hit a few balls at the driving range or practice your putting - and be ready to start on time. Your being late could cause others to be start their game later or you could miss your tee time and have to wait until another is available.
- Dress appropriately. Most golf courses require that you were certain types of clothing. Yup, there is a dress code for golf. Check with the course before you get there to avoid any problems.
- Have the right equipment. This may seem obvious but you only have to experience it once to know what I am talking about. Be sure you have enough tees, balls and the right clubs. You can usually get away with borrowing a couple tees or balls, but borrowing clubs is a definite no-no.
- Take care of the course. If you are using a golf cart be sure you only drive in designated areas. Rake the sand trap after you are finished and repair any divots you make.
- Don't make other groups wait. If the group behind you is playing at a faster pace than you, let them play through. I play golf to relax, not be stressed out that others think I am going to slow. Be sure you wait until others are out of range before you begin golfing again.
Golf can be a great way to relax and enjoy an afternoon. By following these golf rules of etiquette you will earn the respect of others and ensure both your group and other groups will enjoy a great day of golf.
