Are you retired - Learn Martial Arts

By

So you are now retired, and at this stage in your life you don't have a clue how you will spend the rest of your retired life. Well if you intend to remain fit or become fitter now that you have the time to spend, why not indulge yourself in learning martial arts. Growing old does not mean that you can't be fit and neither does it mean you can't learn some form of self defense, besides haven;t you always wanted to be that martial arts expert when you were much younger. Now is the time to do this with all the kids on their own and nobody but yourself to stop you from doing it, however the question is what kind of martial arts should you learn.

Taking a look at the different type of Martial Arts

Exactly how many different types of martial arts are there you may ask. Well the sheer number of martial arts techniques and schools is clearly so vast that to cover each would take an insane amount of time to cover, and with all of them seemingly attractive we should look at the one's that are more ideal for someone whose body has been through the rigors of life and look to the one's that would be more beneficial from a health point of view than from being a superior martial artist.

We will take a short look at two of the most popular forms of martial arts today which are also ideal for people in the older age bracket as these do not entirely rely on physical strength but rather on mental prowess and will but also provide the needed physical exertion to maintain a fit body.

Kung Fu
Perhaps one of the most popular and common forms of martial arts after Karate is Kung Fu. Like Karate it is a unique form of martial arts and there is no known system of fighting similar to it. Kung Fu literally means great effort and can refer to any of the multitude of Chinese originated self defense techniques that number in the hundreds. Each of the techniques have a certain goal and purpose, which the creators have been through generations perfected to provide the practitioner with a set of skills unique to each technique.

The advantage of Kung Fu is that some techniques do not require the practitioner to posses high levels of strength rather they promote focus and execution of technique instead bringing harmony and peaceful state of mind. This is clearly ideal for those that do not have the body strength of youth but still have the mental capacity and strength to practice this form of martial arts.

Karate
The most popular of all martial arts and clearly well known throughout the world, it is the most prevalent in terms of the number of schools commercial or otherwise. The term "Karate" generic in meaning refers to the use of the hand with weapons or "empty hand", with a good variety of karate techniques originating from the Japanese island of Okinawa. While originating from Okinawa, it has spread throughout Japan, the Korea's and the rest of the world where alternate systems have been developed and different interpretations have evolved.

Generally strength is considered as an advantage in the art of Karate, with the stronger individuals being able to master the art through strength and stamina it is not always necessary to be largely built. Aside from this the greatest asset one needs is concentration, which is something any person of any age should be able to utilize and to a certain degree master. Concentration is perhaps the most key element involved in Karate since all the strength required comes from the ability to focus energy into a single move. Without properly being able to maintain a good level of concentration the Moves needed in karate cannot be executed properly and will not be as effective.

No matter which of the martial arts techniques you decide to take on as a self defense system, you should always bear in mind the current state of your body and choose the one that will bring you into a healthier state. Choose the one that will not only make your body stronger but will also give you a stronger will and state of mind, which is one of the primary purposes of martial arts, a combination of mental and physical strength.
