7 Ways To Care For Your Golf Clubs
By Kerry Graylor
Beginners are often surprised to be told they should buy golf clubs to fit, as if they were clothes. The point of course is simply that you do not want clubs that are too long or too short. If you bought a used or cheap set when you were starting out, as many people do, then as you replace them one by one for better clubs you can be sure to get clubs of the correct length for you.
As you assemble your carefully selected set of higher quality clubs you will want to care for them in the best way to be sure that they will last as long as possible. Here are some tips on looking after your golf clubs.
- The grip is important. Any time it starts to be worn it will begin to slip in your hand and your stroke will be affected as your muscles will have to tense up to hold the club securely. So replace any worn grips on your clubs.
- Take a small towel around the course with you so that you can clean any mud and sand off your clubs immediately. This is easier to do before it dries on, and you will want the club to be clean for the next time you use it. If you are also carrying drinking water, you can keep your towel damp.
- Store your clubs inside, do not leave them always in the trunk of your car. They will get damp and rusty there.
- Use head covers on your woods and putter to protect them from being damaged by the heads of other clubs. If you also cover the heads of your irons, that will give double protection.
- Use warm soapy water for cleaning the club heads at home, and always dry them thoroughly to prevent rust.
- Never use any abrasive cleaning products or scratchy brushes on your clubs.
- Keep your clubs in a good quality carrying bag at all times.
The bottom line is that golf clubs that are not well maintained will deteriorate and the accuracy of your shots will go down with them. But clubs that are well looked after should last you a long time and maintain their accuracy so that you can continue to improve your game. So care for your golf clubs well, and they will be an asset throughout your golfing career.
