The Best Place To Retire
If you are considering moving when you retire, you are probably wondering where is the best place to retire. Florida of course is famous for its population of retirees but do not assume that all parts of Florida will be equally suitable. When you are moving to a new area at an older age it can be difficult to make new friends unless you place yourself in a situation with other like minded people. This usually means a community where there are many other retirees and perhaps some clubs or groups for your particular interest areas.
You may come up against the problem of whether you can afford to buy property in the area that you would like to move to. Perhaps your current home is in an area where real estate values are lower and it would not buy you much in a good retirement community. In this case you have a couple of options.
Firstly, instead of buying the property outright, you could look at purchasing a lifetime interest in a property. This is not likely to be very popular with your kids, as they would then have no inheritance, but if you do not have kids then the only disadvantage might be that you could have trouble if you decided you did not like the area and wanted to move again. So check what your rights and options would be in that situation.
Secondly, you could invest in property in your preferred area right now. You could either buy a home that you would plan to move to yourself on retirement, or you could just make some investment in a rented condominium whose value would go up along with other real estate values in the area. You could rent this out until you were ready to sell to buy a place of your own there.
Do not forget that other things may cost more in your retirement community too. The cost of living may generally be higher than you are used to, or certain things like state taxes may be very different. Do not forget to research this and factor it into your financial retirement planning.
You would not want to be living in a wonderful location but with no spare cash to do anything except watch TV day after day. What good is being retired if you cannot celebrate and enjoy your life? Make sure you will have enough cash for the occasional cruise or other vacation and trips to see your family.
On the other hand, some people dream of moving somewhere that everything is cheaper and they can live in luxury on a smaller income in a warm climate. This often means moving to another country. For example, many people from the UK retire to France or Spain. While this can work out great, sometimes people can feel lonely and cut off from their friends and family, especially if their partner passes away.
If you are considering this, do not forget to investigate the health care provisions in your destination country. As you have not spent your working life in that country, their social security or insurance system may not cover you and this could work out expensive. Or maybe the standards of health care are not what you would have at home. This could be a question of life or death. Remember too that if you move somewhere that the cost of living is lower, it may be very difficult to move back.
In the final analysis, everybody's retirement hopes are different, but the way to find the best place to retire for you is do carry out even more research and retirement planning than you would do if you were intending to stay home.
