Relationships for Women Changed With the Baby Boomer

By

Baby boomers have changed the world of relationships and the laws of yesteryear have been rewritten. The criteria for relationships that lasted until the first half of the nineteen hundreds have been the same traditions that have carried down for centuries. Men rule the world; women quietly, behind the scenes, support them.

The women that were the ideal influences for our daughters to look up to were Donna Reed and Doris Day. This is what was considered the perfect picture for the perfect world. The "Stepford Wives" made for the pristine relationship, home and family. That is, until the baby boomer women came of age. Somewhere along the way of their adolescents they got it in their crazy minds to break the mold.

Who knows how it happened; maybe there were more inspiring teachers who influenced them with teachings about the fight for freedom. Maybe it was the result of television and radio that inspired dreams of doing more or being more than just a pristine housewife. Whatever caused this amazing spark, they were definitely inspired! So that is what they did.

Baby boomers fought and marched for the civil rights of minorities and women. They protested the war and made themselves heard. Baby boomers changed the world and their women were on the rise.Relationships were changed during the sixties between the baby boomer women in every aspect.

In generations before a proper girl stayed home with her parents until married away. Once married they became their husbands strong hold maintaining and supporting the home, usually from home. After the children were reared the focus was to continue making that pristine perfect projection, which in the end would usually reflect upon the man's credit.

That was for the most part, the focus of most relationships in a woman's life. Any relationship a woman had was usually with her parents, husband and children. It was unusual to see or hear of a woman with any type of political relationship, course, or driven acts of opinion.

It was accomplished but very rarely did you see an independent woman in an academic or political profile career. Many women who were fortunate enough went on to college to educate themselves and become independent of their parents. Women's liberation was successful in enabling women to attend college, and graduate school giving more opportunities and better careers.

Many more women than their predecessors stayed independent during their drive to succeed; but many more were still able to marry and raise a family in concurrence with their success. These are the superheroes of reality. Now our ideal has changed and our influences are versatile.

The healthy relationship for a baby boomer woman starts with herself. She is strong, intelligent and independent.

  • She is Hillary Rodham Clinton - wife, mother, state senator running for president.
  • She is Susan Sarandon - wife, mother, actress, and activist.
  • She is Oprah Winfrey - journalist, talk show host, actress, magazine editor, and activist.
  • She is Connie Chung - wife, mother, journalist, national news anchor.
  • She is Sheryl Crow - single mother, song writer, singer, and activist.
  • She is Ingrid Newkirk - animal rights activist, cofounder of PETA, author, wife.
  • She is Camille Paglia - American social critic, author, professor of humanities.

These are just a few examples of unique yet versatile women who were born of the boomer era. We may not always agree with the outspoken opinions of these women but we applaud their bravery and efforts. In doing so, they have redesigned the expected traditional relationships the female has with the world today.

Not only are they daughter, wife, and mother. They are brilliant lawyers, doctors, politicians, writers, journalist, teachers, artists, and activists. Women are sensitive creatures who have a relationship with the world and a responsibility to it that they should always enforce. Our baby boomer females enabled us to do just that. Thank you.
